Ph.D. Student Positions Available (Spring/Fall 2025)

Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering

The Beck Research Group in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Houston seeks highly motivated individuals to fill multiple fully funded Civil Engineering Ph.D. positions for Spring or Fall 2025.

Research Focus

The Beck Research Group's research surrounds advancing equity-based infrastructure decision support and social impact performance-based engineering in civil infrastructure for improved community resilience to hazards. We integrate fundamentals of structural reliability, risk assessment, systems modeling, hazard modeling, and probabilistic methods with social science approaches to research these topics. Areas of research interest surround but are not limited to:

• Development of equity-based decision support tools for civil infrastructure (i.e., buildings, electric network, etc.) under hazards (hurricanes, earthquakes, and climate change etc.)
• Infrastructure quality and outage impact modeling through field work and statistical modeling
• Development of community social impact design thresholds with system reliability methods

Qualifications

Ideal applicants should possess expertise in structural reliability/engineering, probabilistic methods, and natural hazards engineering, excellent written and oral communication skills, proficiency in one programming language (e.g., Python, MATLAB, R), proficiency in GIS or other geospatial software, preferably field work experience for data collection (survey and damage assessmnet), and an interest for interdisciplinary work and collaboration.

For Ph.D. students

B.S. and M.S. degrees in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or other related fields. Students with M.S. strongly preferred, but students for direct admission to Ph.D. will be considered.

About PI

Dr. Abigail Beck is an incoming Assistant Professor at the University of Houston. Before joining Houston, she completed her Ph.D. at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She is an interdisciplinary-trained civil/structural engineer who integrates her fundamental specialization in structural reliability and probabilistic methods with field-based and community engaged social science approaches to address infrastructure equity.
